Australian All Schools Championships 2005.
The
race was held at The Olympic Rowing Course at Penrith
about an hour outside Sydney provided the perfect backdrop
for arguably Tri-alliance’s greatest individual
effort this year. Perfect weather and a great course
also was a big highlight. With the best 25 under 19
athletes selected from each state in Australia totalling
25 in the field, including 3 Australian Junior Team
Members, it was fair to say Lynne was up against it
and would need to race very well.
Our
goal was for the race was Top 5, we both thought that
was do-able given the quality of the competition. The
race was held over 750m Swim / 20km Bike / 5km Run.
Lynne
had a solid swim and was out of the water in 6th place
72 seconds behind the leader. Over the flat and fast
course Lynne rode as we know she can and reeled then
all in to come in off the bike in 1st place. After a
slow transition Lynne ran out with NSWIS athlete Melanie
Sexton. The two ran head to head for about 1km and then
Lynne virtually took off.
Looking
like she was enjoying the whole thing, and running the
last 5km in 18mins 18secs and crossed the line to win
by nearly 2minutes from Melanie Sexton and made everyone
in the crowd sit up and take notice that this little
champion may have just ‘arrived’.
It
was one of those ‘had to be there’ moments
that you can’t really accurately describe –
it was absolutely sensational.
A
big thankyou to Lynne’s parents (Jim and Marie)
Tameka and Leigh and Leena who all made the trip up
to see her.
Hopefully
I will have some photos that we can post on the website
shortly.
Two
other Tri-alliance athletes also competed in the Championships.
Michelle Augustenek finished 6th in the 14 – 16
age group, and Meg Russell racing in the 12 –
14 year age group finished with a bronze medal in two
very good performances also.
By
the way the two Tri-alliance girls who won medals (Lynne
and Meg) were the only two athletes out of the entire
Victorian Team of 40 athletes to win medals at the Championships.
What
a great way to finish off the season.
Cheers
Jarrod
Evans
Tri
Alliance Team.
