2006
Victorian Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships
Hi
Team,
Today was the running of the 2006 Victorian Sprint
Distance Triathlon Championships held at Elwood and
we had some more sensational results today.
In what proved to be a sign of much bigger things
to come little Lynne Duthie stunned the entire women’s
elite field to not only catch them but run away with
the women’s victory by over a minute from Hungarian
competitor and ITU ranked Tracey Looze and perennial
bridesmaid Vanessa Hentchel. It was certainly
something that I was privileged to watch today as was
all her team mates – well done Lynne!
The other sensational effort today was from one of
our new guns Renee Lane in only her 4th race ever became
the 25 – 29 women’s sprint champion after
blitzing the field on the swim and then, dominating
the bike leg and hanging on for the run. This
was a great effort and shows that she definitely has
some elite potential over the next few seasons. I
can’t wait to see that.
In some other great results for our team, Sue Sharples
finished 2nd in the 45 – 49 Female (were getting
closer Sue), Pas Di Maio (in only his 3rd race ever)
finished 2nd in the 20 – 24 Male. Alethe
West (westy) finished 2nd in the 20 – 24 Female. Todd
finished off well to finish 4th in Junior Elite after
a poor swim start. Matt Gibson recorded a very
strong result to finish what I think was Top 10 in
the 25 – 29 Male in a very solid and well run
race, after having a slow-ish start to the season – good
job Matt!
Young guns Scott McPherson and Jarred King also finished
well both recording Top 10 finishes in the Junior Boys
(11-12) and (14-15). I am still awaiting confirmation
of their results but both boys showed much improvement
from the last race and will continue to so in the races
left this season.
In the hard luck story of the day – John Russell
our Qantas Pilot extraordinaire punctured for the first
time ever to put himself out of contention. We’ve
all been there, so bad luck John!
In the other Great News Story of the Day – The
Tasmanian Half Ironman was held in Ulverstone about
30mins drive from Hobart. We had Belinda (Buds)
Harrison, Mal Leszczynski and Scotty Harrison all running
around in this one. Belinda had the jackpot race
of the day finishing in 4th spot in 4hrs 39mins, only
8mins behind seasoned veteran Belinda Granger and showing
that even without a taper she is a much improved athlete,
and things are looking good for Port Macquarie. Mal
also had a great race finishing 3rd in the 40 – 44
Male and recording a very slick time of 4hrs 30mins. This
time and placing qualified Mal for the Australian Ironman
in Port Macquarie also – well done Mal. Considering
the hills in this course this was a very good result. Scotty
Harrison also had a much improved result nearly cracking
the 5hour barrier and recording of smack on 5hrs. Great
result Scotty!
In some Cycling News – Alicia Evans (a.k.a – my
sister) rode a brilliant Bay Cycling Series (held over
6 Days) to be the leader for the Tri 2 Cycle Team in
the Tour and finish in the Top 20 Overall against some
of the best female cyclists in the world. This
was lic’s first foray into the world of Professional
Cycling and it was to be a steep learning curve over
the 6 Days but she performed very consistently and
brilliantly against a top field. Well done and
I can’t wait to see the progress for next year. Now
that will be one to watch.
Please be reminded that this week is Hell Week for
many athletes so – please be careful with your
training and pay special attention to you recovery
and hydration levels as this week promises to be hot – hot – hot
and I’m not talking about the training!
Good Luck!
Cheers
Jarrod Evans
